", Do You Know the Difference Between Factory Raised Chicken
and Free Range Pastured Poultry?"

Factory Chicken Farm
Factory chicken farming is a lot different than what you probably imagine. The birds are raised in buildings breathing concentrated ammonia, crammed so close together they can never preen themselves because their beaks and toes are cut off!

They are genetically altered to grow twice as fast and are fed a highly concentrated diet of animal by products, antibiotics, sometimes steriods, all designed to fatten them up as fast as possible. The industry has shaved a few weeks off of normal growing time, the welfare of the birds is pitiful though, generally the heart and lungs are not developed enough to support their bodies.

Likewise the nutritional qualities of their meat has been drastically reduced, which is why it tastes much like cardboard, bland and flavorless. Or as one of our customers recently said, "factory chicken is just something to chew on." Factory style assembly line production has created artificially low prices at the expense of humane treatment of the birds. But you don't have to eat that...

"Now You Can Enjoy Humanely
Raised Pastured Poultry"

Pastured Poultry

Free Range Pastured Poultry
In contrast to all of this is how we raise chicken. Free range on green pasture where they live in their natural environment, allowing them to enjoy fresh green pastures, sunshine, and clean water where they can preen and sprawl, chase insects and grow naturally without the use of any hormones1, steroids, antibiotics, or animal by products. We use all natural locally grown grain and plant proteins in our supplemental feed without herbicides, pesticides, or chemicals of any kind. We believe that raising chickens on pasture is more humane, its a stress free life for the bird and is better for us, you and the environment. But, we also have very limited production. We take pride in raising our children in apprenticeships, teaching them old fashioned farm values.

A recent article in Eating Well, the August/September 2006 issue, remarked on some statements by a group calling itself "Center for Consumer Freedom." This is an outfit funded by agricultural chemical companies and fast-food giants. They don't like it that people like you want better food, because ultimately it means that the inefficiency of process in growing food naturally undermines the ability to have a fast food franchise on every corner. They are warning consumers that manure, you know chicken poop, is a "luscious breeding ground for all kinds of nastry microbes." The claim is that free range chickens are no better than chemically castrated factory birds, this is based upon the claim that the land that free range birds forage on has chicken poop on it, hence it is not better than those laden with antibiotics and that eat animal by products. Of course, what they failed to mention is that factory-raised chickens poop too!

USDA Approved Small Farm Poultry ProcessingThe facts are very different, raising chickens on pastures using permaculture practices is improving our soil where each season our pastures become even more green and lush! Our pastured poultry have strong immune systems, we use mobile chicken coops , which are moved each day on our 100 acre farm, the birds are watered, fed and checked regularly for healthy conditions. When it comes time to prepare them for market we personally take them to our nearest USDA approved processing facility, that is specifically designed for the small farmer. Although it costs more, we produce a finer product that is raised humanely enjoying a better quality of life, is more healthy, nutritious and tastes great!

"What Everybody Ought to Know
About the Term Organic"

Testimonial

It's important to me that my food is raised and treated properly, I appreciate what you are doing and your chicken tastes great too!

It used to be that you could presume that "organic poultry" meant a free range grass fed chicken, not anymore! Organic is now a term that means market control - not quality of product. The organic industry was started by small family farmers concerned about living in harmony with nature, thus they practiced sustainable agriculture using all natural means. There was both a spirit and letter of practices that was followed. It is people like us, people that measure their success by the quality of the food we produce, not the effeciency of the process used to grow it.

In 2002, however, due to consumer demand for better food intervening into agri-corporation profits this became a regulated term under the control of the USDA. Suddenly big business that practiced the letter, but not the spirit of organic farming, took control of the term organic and the quality consumers associated with that term inured to their benefit. Buying organic poultry doesn't solve the issue of animal welfare, because factory style farms, like that pictured above, can simply feed their chickens certified feed and suddenly they have "organic chicken."

In contrast, because of the additional time and costs to create and maintain mounds of paperwork to certify what you don't do and exhorbitant license fees to use the term, some of the nations best small organic farms can no longer call their small farm fresh product "organic!" The people that created the organic market are economically squeezed out of the market.

"Get Rid of the Bland Flavorless Taste of Factory Chicken Once and For All"

Testimonial

Your chicken tastes so much better than the bland supermarket chicken we've been eating. It's like the "filet mignon" of chicken!

Our chickens diets consist largely of alfalfa, clover and insects - their superior taste is the product of consuming the phytonutrients of living plants. You've seen the advertisements to eat five servings of vegetables per day for good health? We think chickens should eat that way too. By switching to pastured poultry you are sending a message to the factory chicken industry while providing your family with better taste and superior nutrition.

Raising our chickens naturally rewards us with a savory flavor that it's in a class by itself. Our free range pastured poultry is the cleanest and healthiest source of protein that is over 400% richer in vitamins, such as vitamin A, E, B12 and folic acid as well as a great source of conjugated linoic acid (CLA) with Omega 3 and 6 comparable to salmon!
